Precision primary: Conqueror stacks fast as Q + auto chains tag enemies on every dash, ramping to full adaptive bonus mid-fight. Triumph pays for long fights, Legend: Alacrity feeds attack speed, Coup de Grace finishes the low-HP target her R pulls in.
Resolve secondary: Bone Plating and Overgrowth give the lane sustain (a champion's ability to stay healthy without backing) Nilah needs while she walks up at 225 melee range to last-hit. Without those two slots, every poke trade pre-6 chips her HP bar to nothing.
Against a poke-heavy enemy bot duo (Caitlyn + Lux, Varus + Karma), swap Resolve for Inspiration with Magical Footwear (free boots at minute 12) and Biscuit Delivery (HP and mana biscuits in lane), trading defensive stats for raw lane sustain.
Win Condition
Survive lane to two items with Blade of the Ruined King and Infinity Edge online, then use R as engage on grouped enemies and W to invalidate their ADC's auto-attacks while you carry the fight.
Weakness
Melee 225 attack range and zero ranged tools outside Q. Hard countered by long-range poke that chips her before W is up, and by enchanters that disengage her R so the pull connects on no one.
Overview
Nilah is a melee marksman (an ADC that fights at 225 range instead of the usual 500-650). Her kit centres on five pieces: extra XP and shared healing from Joy Unending, a range-extending empowered auto with Formless Blade (Q), a basic-attack-dodging mist with Jubilant Veil (W), a low cooldown dash with Slipstream (E), and a damage-and-pull teamfight ult with Apotheosis (R). She is squishy (high damage, low defenses) with no ranged tools outside Q, so the lane is a survival exercise: don't die to poke, hit two items, then start fights on your terms.
The win condition is melee: at level 6 with R up, walk behind your support's engage, R to pull two or three enemies into your team, then W to ignore their basic attacks while you finish the carry. Skill expression lives in W timing (proactive against the enemy ADC's auto rhythm, not panic-defensive) and in R angles — cast from inside the enemy backline so the pull funnels them backwards into your team, not you forwards into theirs.
Recommended Build
Starting items:
Doran's Blade + 1
Health Potion. The 10 AD + 80 HP + omnivamp (an item passive that heals you for a percentage of all the damage you deal) is the standard ADC opener; you need every point of HP because your attack range is 225.
Core items (in order):
Blade of The Ruined King — first-item rush. On-hit current-HP damage (extra physical damage scaled to the enemy's remaining HP) plus Clawing Shadows, which slows by 30% after three attacks on a champion, lets Nilah stick to a kited target. Lifesteal sustains her through long trades — exactly the window W creates.
Berserker's Greaves — attack speed boots. Mercury's Treads only against 3+ hard CC threats aimed at you (Leona + Zyra + Lissandra).
Infinity Edge — biggest physical damage spike. Crit on top of BotRK on-hit deletes squishies (high damage, low defense champs) in under two seconds.
Bloodthirster — more lifesteal and an overheal shield. Carries you through the seconds after Jubilant Veil ends, which is when most Nilah players die.
Phantom Dancer — attack speed, crit, and 10% move speed. Spectral Waltz makes you Ghosted, so you walk through the wave and through bodies to stay on the target instead of being blocked off the kill.
Situational items:
Maw of Malmortius — against heavy AP burst (Syndra support, Brand, Vel'Koz). The magic shield only fires when magic damage would take you below 30% HP, so it catches the burst that would otherwise kill you mid-dash.
Mortal Reminder — against heavy healing comps (Soraka, Aatrox, Vladimir). Applies Grievous Wounds (a debuff that cuts the target's healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds) on auto and shreds their sustain plan.
Lord Dominik's Regards — against HP-stacking front lines (Sion, Cho'Gath, Dr. Mundo). 35% armor penetration plus Giant Slayer, up to 15% bonus damage against a target sitting on 1500 bonus health.
Guardian Angel — against assassin pressure (Zed flank, Rengar, Kha'Zix). The revive bridges the cooldown gap between R casts, your most vulnerable window.
Boots:
Berserker's Greaves is default.
Mercury's Treads only against multiple hard CC threats like Leona + Lissandra.
Skill order: Max Q first (lower cooldown means more empowered autos per fight and better wave clear), E second (the dash is your gap-close and your auto-attack reset between Q casts), W last (the rank-1 dodge duration is already enough; only the cooldown matters and it scales slowly). Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.
Runes: Primary Precision with Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, Coup de Grace. Secondary Resolve with Bone Plating and Overgrowth for the early-game survivability that lets you reach scaling. Stat shards: Attack Speed, Adaptive Force, Health Scaling. Against a poke-heavy bot duo swap Resolve for Inspiration with Magical Footwear and Biscuit Delivery.
Pick into / Counterpicks
Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.
Champions Nilah beats
Short-range damage carries that want melee trades
Nilah's Jubilant Veil dodges every basic attack, which neutralises Samira's Daredevil Impulse stacking — her trade-up window is dead the moment Veil pops, and Slipstream resets the spacing before she can complete an Inferno Trigger R execute combo.
SamiraHyperscaling ranged ADC without self-peel
Apotheosis yanks Tristana inward at the end of the channel, breaking her Rocket Jump repositioning attempt; Jubilant Veil dodges every Rapid Fire-empowered auto during the pull window, then Slipstream resets the spacing before her Explosive Charge primer detonates.
TristanaStationary on-hit ranged carry
Kog'Maw has no dash and has to hold still in auto range while Bio-Arcane Barrage is up, and that is exactly the window Apotheosis needs to pull him into your team. Jubilant Veil dodges every Caustic Spittle and W-empowered auto during the pull.
Kog MawStealth-reliant ranged carry
Twitch needs Ambush camouflage to set up Spray and Pray autos from safety; he has no dash to answer a pull, and Apotheosis drags him out of position into Nilah's frontline.
TwitchAuto-attack scaling ADC with Plasma stacks
Jubilant Veil invalidates every Icathian Rain missile auto and on-hit attack during Kai'Sa's Plasma stack window, denying her the basic-attack chain she needs to evolve and to detonate Plasma.
Kai Sa
Champions that beat Nilah
Long-range trap marksman
Caitlyn's 650 attack range plus Piltover Peacemaker line poke out-distances Nilah's 225 melee every wave, and 90 Caliber Net knocks her backwards out of Slipstream commit range.
CaitlynPermaslow poke marksman
Ashe's Volley fires a wide cone of arrows every few seconds and Frost Shot's permaslow makes every poke auto stick to Nilah while she walks up to 225 melee. Ranger's Focus rapid-fire empowers her trade burst.
AsheLane-bully damage ADCs with auto-stack pressure
Draven's Spinning Axe stacking damage chunks Nilah down before Jubilant Veil's 26s rank-1 cooldown is back up; he trades freely in the Veil downtime and Stand Aside knock-aside cancels her R Apotheosis pull animation by pushing her out of the spin radius mid-channel.
DravenPolymorph enchanter support
Lulu's Whimsy polymorphs Nilah mid-Apotheosis spin, cancelling the channel and disabling her auto-attacks so Jubilant Veil's dodge becomes useless during the lockout. Help, Pix! shields the enemy ADC through Nilah's full burst window.
LuluDisengage enchanter support
Janna's Howling Gale knocks Nilah out of Apotheosis pull radius mid-channel, and Monsoon pushes back every enemy Nilah just pulled in, undoing her teamfight ult entirely.

Key matchups
- Caitlyn: Heavily Caitlyn-favored pre-6. Her 650 range plus Piltover Peacemaker out-pokes you, and Nilah has no retaliation from 225 melee. Don't trade autos pre-3 — accept a 20-30 CS deficit (last-hit count, the gold from killing minions) at minute 10. Use Slipstream only to dodge Peacemakers. After Blade of The Ruined King plus R, ask support to engage river-side and R to pull her out of position.
- Draven: Even-to-favored once you understand W timing. His Spinning Axe stacks deal massive damage in short trades. Use Jubilant Veil the moment he commits — the dodge invalidates the axe windup and he wastes 2-3 stacks. Trade only after his W speed boost is on cooldown. Draven snowballs hard (an early lead that compounds via items and kills) without jungler intervention.
- Samira: Slightly Samira-favored without W respect. Her Daredevil Impulse passive empowers her next attack by style — most damage comes from autos during Inferno Trigger (her R). W the instant she ults, dodge every shot of the channel, then R her into your support as the channel ends. Don't trade autos pre-6.
- Tristana: Slightly Nilah-favored after 6. Her Rocket Jump commits her to melee — exactly where Nilah wants the fight. Save R for the moment she E's onto you (Explosive Charge primes a detonation), pull her in, W to ignore her auto chain, support finishes. Pre-6 play passively; her Q burst chunks you faster than W returns.
- Lulu: Heavily Lulu-favored as enemy support. Her Whimsy polymorphs you mid-R spin (turns you into a critter that can't auto or cast), Help, Pix! shields your target through full burst, and Wild Growth knocks you out of pull range. Scale through it: farm safely, no plays before two items, wait for fights where your team's CC pre-empts Whimsy.
Power spikes & win conditions
- Level 2: With Q + E you have your minimum trade. Dash through a minion to land Slipstream damage on the enemy ADC, fire one Formless Blade at extended range, walk back. Don't commit to the third auto unless your support follows up.
- Level 6: First Apotheosis unlocks the all-in (a full commitment to fight until kill, no escape). With R, engage onto an over-extended enemy bot (standing too far up the lane without a path home) by E-ing forward, R to pull both together, and burst whoever your support stuns first.
Blade of The Ruined King completion (~ minute 11-13): Lane equalizer. On-hit damage plus the Clawing Shadows slow gives Nilah the stick (staying in range of a kited target) she lacks pre-item. Force objective fights at Drake or Rift Herald — your DPS now matters both to the objective and to any skirmish.
Infinity Edge online (~ minute 21-24): Hypercarry threshold. Crits on top of BotRK on-hit shred any squishy in 2-3 autos under R pull, Conqueror fully stacked by the third auto. From here you are the win condition: second-furthest position in fights, R when two enemies overlap, W when their ADC fires, clean up.
Common mistakes
- Casting W reactively at low HP. Jubilant Veil is a proactive cooldown, not an emergency button. Pop it the moment you read the enemy ADC's auto rhythm (right before their next basic), so the dodge invalidates a real attack. Saving it for "when I'm low" usually means you're dead before pressing it.
- Using R as the engage in a 5v5. Apotheosis is a 400 unit range channel. Walking 400 units forward to cast it on a backline pulls your own backline into their front line — the opposite of what you want. Cast R from inside a fight already started, pulling enemies backwards into your team.
- Trading autos in lane pre-Blade of The Ruined King. Nilah's 225 attack range sits inside every kit's damage zone pre-item. Every auto trade with Caitlyn, Tristana, or Lucian costs you more HP than them. Farm with Q at extended range, accept the CS deficit, reach your spike.
- Slipstreaming into the enemy team for engage. E sits on a flat 0.5s cooldown but costs mana every cast, so your mana bar is the limit, not the timer. Use it as a dodge for the first hard CC (a stun, root, or knock-up — the dangerous one that locks you down), then as an auto reset. Spending E to enter the fight leaves you no dodge for the diver who lands on you.
- Ignoring her sharedheal passive in support choice. Joy Unending shares ally heals and shields at reduced value. Nilah + a heal support (Soraka, Yuumi, Nami, Milio) doubles her effective lane sustain. Don't pick Nilah into a hook support (Blitzcrank, Thresh, Pyke) — the passive synergy is wasted.
Advanced tip
Practice the R pivot in practice tool. Walk every standard teamfight spot (dragon pit, Baron pit, mid lane chokes, river bushes) and find the two angles from which Apotheosis pulls enemies backwards onto your front line, not forwards onto theirs. In a real fight, when your support engages, your reflex shouldn't be "R the closest target" — it should be: position to a memorized pivot angle, E into the cast position, then R so the pull funnels two or three enemies into your tank's CC chain. A clean angle on a Caitlyn + Lulu bot in a Drake fight turns a 5v5 into a 5v3 in one spell, because the pull strips the enemy ADC of positioning and her enchanter of peel range at once.
