Core Abilities

Carnivore
Killing a unit restores HP and mana. Champion takedowns refund a much larger chunk. Free lane sustain (HP/mana regen between fights) on every last-hit (killing blow on a minion).
Rupture
Rupture
Skillshot (aimed line) at 950 range: knocks enemies up, slows them, and deals magic damage. Long-range poke (chip damage from safety) and engage tool. The windup is slow and visible, so aim where the target is walking.
Feral Scream
Feral Scream
Cone in front of Cho'Gath (300 range): deals magic damage and silences whoever it hits (they cannot cast abilities) for 1.6/1.7/1.8/1.9/2s by rank. Chain it after a Q knock-up on melee targets.
Vorpal Spikes
Vorpal Spikes
Activated buff, not a toggle: for 6 seconds his next 3 attacks deal 30/50/70/90/110 (+30% AP) plus target max-HP magic damage and slow. 30 mana, 8/7/6/5/4s cooldown. Main damage vs tanks and waveclear.
Feast
Feast
Single-target true damage: 300/475/650 to champions, with no percent-health threshold. If it kills, Cho'Gath gains a stack worth 80/120/160 max HP by rank. Only 6 stacks come from minions and non-epic monsters.

Why these runes

Resolve: Grasp triggers every 4s in melee (procs = activates), healing and stacking permanent HP — fits Cho'Gath's HP+AP curve. Demolish takes the tower even on losing lanes, Second Wind regens poke damage, Overgrowth stacks HP every 8 minions.

Why secondary

Sorcery secondary: Manaflow Band sustains mana for Q poke and E waveclear during long lanes, Transcendence raises ability haste (lower cooldowns) so Q is up almost every wave to peek for a knockup.

When to switch secondary

Vs ranged poke or AP burst tops (Vladimir, Teemo, Kennen) swap Sorcery for Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery (free HP and mana sustain pre-6) and Magical Footwear (free boots at minute 12).

Win Condition

Stack Feast on cannons and kills to inflate HP. At 5+ stacks + Riftmaker + Spirit Visage, walk in as second tank, absorb focus (be the target), then chain Q knockup into W silence on their carry (main damage dealer).

Weakness

No dash, no escape outside Flash. Ranged tops out-range the 950 Q and kite him, hitting him from outside his reach. Ignite plus healing cuts hurt before he stacks: losing lane snowballs, because Feast needs farm.

Overview

Cho'Gath is a tank-mage hybrid who buys items that give both health and ability power, and stacks permanent max HP through his ultimate Feast. His kit pairs a long-range knockup (Q) with a melee silence (W), letting him interrupt the engage abilities of melee bruisers in lane and lock down enemy carries in teamfights. The damage that scales most with his build comes from Vorpal Spikes (E), which adds magic damage based on the target's maximum HP — meaning he hurts tanks and fed bruisers more than squishies.

The game plan is straightforward but demanding on patience: farm safely behind minions, look for Q knockups to set up trades or peel ganks, and never pass up the chance to R a low-HP minion (each champion stack is permanent, each cannon kill with R is +80 max HP at rank 1, +120 at rank 2 and +160 at rank 3, permanently). Once you hit 5+ stacks plus two HP+AP items, you become a second tank that the enemy team must focus before your carries — that is what wins teamfights.

Recommended Build

Starting items: Doran's Shield Doran's Shield + Health Potion Health Potion. Doran's Shield gives 110 HP and post-damage regeneration that synergizes with Carnivore last-hit healing.

Core items (in order):

  1. Riftmaker Riftmaker — first full item. 70 ability power, 350 health, 15 ability haste. Void Corruption adds 2% damage per second in combat with champions, up to 8%, and only at that maximum does it give omnivamp; Void Infusion turns 2% of your bonus health into ability power, which is why it scales with Feast stacks better than any other AP item.
  2. Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps — default boots vs an AD top opponent. Reduces incoming damage from basic attacks by 10%.
  3. Liandry's Torment Liandry's Torment — second damage item. HP + AP + a burn passive that deals percent max-HP magic damage over time. Stacks naturally with Q slow and W silence keeping enemies in range to take the burn ticks.
  4. Spirit Visage Spirit Visage — HP + magic resist + 25% heal-and-shield amplification. Multiplies Carnivore healing, Riftmaker omnivamp, and any team shields you receive.
  5. Rylai's Crystal Scepter Rylai's Crystal Scepter — HP + AP + a slow on every ability that hits a champion. Stacks on top of Q's slow and means W silenced targets cannot kite away while the silence runs out.

Situational items:

  • Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads — vs heavy magic damage or repeated CC chains. Swap from Plated Steelcaps before first back.
  • Force of Nature Force of Nature — vs squads with 2+ AP threats. Stacks magic resist and adds movement speed to catch kiters.
  • Thornmail Thornmail — vs auto-attack carries plus healing comps (Vayne + Soraka, Master Yi + lifesteal). Applies Grievous Wounds (cuts healing and health regeneration by 40% for 3 seconds) on every hit you take.
  • Warmog's Armor Warmog's Armor — sixth item once you have 5+ Feast stacks. The Warmog's Heart HP threshold is trivial when you stack; the regen lets you skip backs and roam at full HP.
  • Hollow Radiance Hollow Radiance — vs minion-stack mages (Heimerdinger, Malzahar) and AP teams that group. The aura passive clears stacked minions and chunks the enemy frontline.

Boots: Plated Steelcaps Plated Steelcaps is default vs AD top, Mercury's Treads Mercury's Treads vs AP top or heavy CC.

Skill order: Max Q first (slow, knockup, primary trade tool), E second (waveclear and tank-shredding on-hits), W last (silence is great but per-rank damage is small). Take a point in R at levels 6, 11, 16.

Runes: Primary Resolve with Grasp of the Undying, Demolish, Second Wind, Overgrowth. Secondary Sorcery with Manaflow Band and Transcendence. Vs ranged poke top, swap Sorcery for Inspiration with Biscuit Delivery and Time Warp Tonic.

Pick into / Counterpicks

Draft-level matchups: when this pick shines and which champions are picked against it. Mechanical reasoning, not winrate.

Champions Chogath beats

  • Slow-windup melee bruiser with pull engage

Rupture (Q) knockup interrupts Apprehend (E) pull animation, and Feral Scream (W) silence blocks Decimate (Q) follow-up. Carnivore (P) sustain matches Hemorrhage (P) bleed, and Feast (R) deals flat true damage (650 at rank 3), not a percent execute.

    Darius
  • Slow-windup melee bruiser with grab combo

Rupture (Q) knockup cancels the Haymaker (W) channel mid-cast, and Feral Scream (W) silence shuts down Facebreaker (E) grab setup. Riftmaker omnivamp out-sustains Pit Grit (P) right punch and Feast (R) executes The Show Stopper (R) carrier.

    Sett
  • Mobile melee diver with dash resets

Rupture (Q) knockup catches Bladesurge (Q) mid-dash, breaking her reset chain. Feral Scream (W) silence blocks her Flawless Duet (E) follow-up, and Feast (R) executes her once she retreats below threshold post Vanguard's Edge (R).

    Irelia
  • Melee AP fighter without hard CC

Vladimir has no instant lockdown, so nothing interrupts the Rupture (Q) windup. Feral Scream (W) silence shuts down Transfusion (Q) and Tides of Blood (E) during an all-in, and Sanguine Pool (W) is too short to outlast the Vorpal Spikes (E) max-HP burn.

    Vladimir
  • Short-cooldown lane bully without ranged poke

Carnivore (P) sustain matches Cull the Meek (Q) heal in trades, and Rupture (Q) knockup interrupts Slice and Dice (E) stun dash mid-flight. Feast (R) executes Renekton below the stack threshold once Vorpal Spikes (E) burn chips him down.

    Renekton

Champions that beat Chogath

  • Ranged top with poke and movement disengage

Teemo stands beyond Rupture (Q) 950 range, walks back with Move Quick (W) when Cho steps up, and Blinding Dart (Q) cancels his auto-attack trades. Toxic Shot (E) chips to half HP before level 6, and Cho has no dash to close.

    Teemo
  • Mobile melee duelist with parry

Riposte (W) parries Feral Scream (W) silence and stuns Cho mid-trade, Lunge (Q) dodges Rupture (Q) knockup, and Grand Challenge (R) vital popping shreds his HP pool. Continuous Duelist's Dance (P) damage out-trades the slow Q windup.

    Fiora
  • Late-game scaler with true damage autos

Divine Ascent (P) turns her ranged at level 6 (+350 range, 525 total) with fire waves at 11; the damage is magic, so Spirit Visage and Force of Nature bite into it. She wins by staying outside the 950 range of Rupture (Q) — Radiant Blast (Q) is only 900.

    Kayle
  • Tanky utility top with shields and taunt

Ki Barrier (P) shields off the Rupture (Q) poke and Spirit's Refuge (W) blocks the basic attacks that carry Vorpal Spikes (E), which is where most of Cho's damage lives. Shadow Dash (E) taunts him mid-trade and Stand United (R) denies Feast (R) commits across the map.

    Shen
  • Mobile AD bruiser with point-and-click stun

Shield Vault (W) point-and-click stun cancels Rupture (Q) cast mid-windup, and Comet Spear (Q) spear poke bullies Cho before Riftmaker comes online. Aegis Assault (E) blocks Vorpal Spikes (E) auto-attacks during trades.

    Pantheon

Key matchups

  • Darius: Before level 6, respect his passive bleed, Hemorrhage, which stacks up to five. Q him before he can land his E pull, then walk away. After 6, Feast is 300 true damage at rank 1 and 650 at rank 3: compare that number to the enemy's current health bar, not to a percentage, and remember the in-game indicator ignores shields.
  • Sett: Q the wind-up frame of his W (the orange punch). If he lands W on you, accept the trade and W-silence him to block his E grab. Buy Plated Steelcaps and rush Riftmaker. If he gets ahead, the stun on his ultimate hurts enough to justify Mercury's Treads instead.
  • Teemo: Counterpick. Take Doran's Shield + Second Wind, push the wave under tower with E waveclear, and ask for jungler ganks. Buy Hexdrinker Hexdrinker as a first item if his lane lead snowballs (build into Maw of Malmortius later).
  • Fiora: Even-to-losing matchup. She parries your W silence — never throw W naked. Use Q to interrupt her dash trades, hold W for after she burns Riposte.
  • Malphite: Even matchup: he scales worse than you do. He has no sustain and his Q poke is mana-expensive; trade with Q+W when his mana is low. Watch his R post-6: it interrupts your R cast.

Power spikes & win conditions

  • Level 2: With Q + E you can trade aggressively: Q for the knockup, then walk in and burn 3 E auto-attacks while they cannot move. Free 35-40% HP swing if you land Q.
  • Level 6: First Feast unlocks execute pressure. The cooldown is 80 seconds and the range is 175 (melee + a step). If your jungler can land any CC on a low-HP enemy, you walk in and R for a permanent stack.
  • Riftmaker Riftmaker completion (~ minute 13-15): Trade math flips. The omnivamp plus Carnivore healing means you can stand and fight melee bruisers through their full combo without backing.
  • 5+ Feast stacks (~ minute 20-25): You become a second tank. With Riftmaker + Spirit Visage + 5 stacks you sit around 3800-4200 effective HP. Walk into the enemy backline, eat the burst, and chain Q-W on their carry.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping Feast on cannon minions for the gold. A cannon stack is +80 max HP at rank 1, +120 at rank 2 and +160 at rank 3, permanently. Even if you give up 60 gold on the minion, the HP scales harder than the gold ever could. Always R the cannon if no champion is in execute range.
  • Using Q as poke without follow-up. Q has a 0.63s wind-up; against a moving target you need to lead by ~half a champion's body length. If you cannot follow up with a W or an auto, save Q for engage or peel.
  • Walking up to last-hit without spacing. Cho'Gath moves at 345 and attacks from 125 range, with no dash, so he has to walk into melee to last-hit and cannot walk back out. If you stand on the wave's caster minions, you get all-inned (engaged on with full commitment) by mobile bruisers. Last-hit from the back of the wave.
  • Casting E too early. Vorpal Spikes charges only your next 3 attacks and expires after 6 seconds. Press it when you are already in range to swing, not while you are still walking in, or the window burns on empty air.
  • R-sniping a champion with full HP. Feast deals 650 true damage at rank 3, before any bonus. That is meaningful but you give up the 60-second cooldown and the chance to permanent-stack on a minion. Save R for executes or panic peel.

Advanced tip

Cancel your auto-attack windup with Q to bait a Yasuo Wind Wall: start the auto, see the wall pop, then cast Q on the spot they are walking to. The Q skillshot is a ground rupture that travels under the wall (the wall blocks projectiles, not ground effects). Most ranged champions cannot tell the difference between an auto-cancel and a held-back ability, so you get a free knockup on a target who thought they had immunity. The same trick works against Braum E (Unbreakable) and Pantheon E (Aegis Assault, the stance that blocks incoming damage).
